Nando’s, Portugese Restaurant, Maidstone, Kent is a place I have eaten at on a number of occasions. After hearing the news that the premises were closing while refurbishment works were carried out, I decided to wait to see what restoration works had taken place. As far as I could see, there were very few alterations; literately! The layout of the restaurant was the same, the furnishings were the same (other than some green tiling near the entrance), with the same members of staff, serving the same menu.

I can only presume that the restoration work carried out was in the kitchen or back-of-house as everything appeared the same as before they closed for the refurb. With nothing exciting about the decor to report, let’s talk about the food and drink!

I ordered some olives to start and half a chicken for my main which was cooked in Extra Hot Peri-Peri seasoning accompanied with a couple of sides, namely Peri Chips and sweetcorn. With refillable soft drinks at the ready, I tucked into my evening meal.

As you can expect, the chicken was moist, succulent and tender and was seasoned well. With a bottle of Extra Hot (and Hot) Peri-Peri sauce to hand, I proceeded to tuck in!

If you have yet to try Nando’s Portugese Tarts, do it! Portugese Tarts are a Portugese equivalent to the British Egg Custard Tart we all know and love. However, Portuguese egg tarts use a heavy cream with their egg yolks, creating a smooth, creamy filling and crunchy crust.

Reminiscent of a Western Custard Tart, the Portugese Custard Tart is a little sweeter, a little smaller and a little more indulgent than our home loved classic cake. If you only pop in to Nando’s for one thing, the Portugese Tart would be it. A creamy delicacy not to be missed!
