Just Ales, Micropub, Wells, Somerset
Just Ales, Micropub, Wells, Somerset is the first micropub in Somerset, opening in 2006. The first Micropub (The Butchers Arms in Herne Bay, Kent) was opened a year ealier in Kent in 2005. Since then they have grown to around 180 throughout the country. Although the name implies that a micropub constitutes a small pub, in reality there is no strict formula to a micropub. Essentially, a place is categorised or referred to as a micropub when the premises previously didn’t have a drinks licence and / or didn’t have a history of selling alcohol at that address. Having said that, as an unwritten rule, micropubs (on the whole) don’t have televisions, spirits, or fruit machines.

Just Ales is a fantastic little micropub tucked down the back streets of Wells in Somerset. A charming wateringhole with charming staff and fellow drinkers. Having researched the area during my stay in Charlton Mackrel (just outside the neighbouring town of Shepton Mallet), Somerset, I stumbled across Just Ales and just had to visit. Firstly as it is Somerset’s first micropub, opening in 2006, and secondly because they showcased a selection of locally sourced ales, porters, bitters and IPAs.

With cask beers served from the barrel as most micropubs, towards the back of the premises, rotating between various breweries and brought to you at the table… I genuinely didn’t want to leave.
Just Ales, micropub, Wells, Somerset had seven real ales and four ciders with a selection of Belgian bottled beers, red and white wines, a range of soft drinks and tea or coffee too. With the popup decor of walls adorned with paintings from local artists and beer mats from Somerset and beyond, this pub is a must go to! After chatting to the friendly locals about their favourite beers and local pubs and ordered myself three third to try as many as I could during my stay.

With outside seating to the front and back of the premises and over thirty seats inside, you’ll always be given a warm welcome and walked through the menu by their knowledgable staff and there great bunch of customers / friends! Did I mention the board games? Get down there for yourself and check it out! Definitely worth travelling to. Why not pop in, or head over to their website to find out more…

I too love the Just Ales micropub, definitely a must visit! Very friendly locals, I had a fun time, lots of banter and my boyfriend loved the ales he tried, we didn’t want to leave 😀
