JD Wetherspoon set to host their first national gin festival in August 2018
With the popularity of gin increasing over the past year or so, JD Wetherspoon are about to launch their first ever gin festival! Not just that, in typical Wetherspoon’s style, they also have some slimline offers too!
Featuring five overseas gins, including Gin Mare from Spain, Roku from Japan, Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Ginonkey from Germany, Sharish Blue Magic Gin and from Portugal and a Malfy Gin Con Limone from Italy, there a fair few to try. The price of each gin will also include a free mixer!
In addition to the introduction of international gins at JD Wetherspoon, their UK gins will include Jawbox Single Dry Gin from Belfast in Ireland, Masons Dry Yorkshire Gin from Bedale in Yorkshire, Wrecking Coast Clotted Cream Gin from Tintagel in Cornwall, Brecon Special Reserve from Penderyn in Wales, Finni’s Black Bee Gin and the award winning Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin from Tonbridge in Kent to name a few! With thirty gins to try, there’s lots of botanical treats to sample.
All of the gins served at JD Wetherspoon’s Gin Festival will be in a Copa de Balon glass, which is a bulbous glass at the bottom, narrowing at the top to bring out the aroma’s and flavours of your gin and tonic.
In the words of Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin, it is “their first national gin festival and we believe that customers will enjoy trying the superb range of drinks on offer. The gins will be on a par with those served in any leading bar, restaurant or hotel, but at far better value prices”. Nice!
All JD Wetherspoon pubs across the UK will be hosting a national gin festival from Friday 17th August to Monday 27th August.

With the JD Wetherspoon Gin Festival starting tomorrow, here’s ten gin facts to enjoy with your gin…
1. Legally, gin must have a prominent juniper flavour. Other than that, there are no restrictions as to what other botanicals may be used during distillation.
2. London dry gin doesn’t have to be made in London. The term refers to the style of gin, rather than it’s location.
3. In New York, in 1928, a few years before the Bloody Mary was created, gin with tomato juice was a popular hangover cure.
4. Nearly all of the juniper used in the gin making process is picked wild.
5. The quinine found in tonic water was also used for medicinal purposes to help prevent malaria. The British living in the tropical colonies added gin to the tonic to mask the bitter flavour.
6. In the navy, sailors were given rum as a part of their daily rations; officers, on the other hand, were given gin.
7. There has been a world gin day since 2009, on the second Saturday in June.
8. Around 1830, the first gin palaces opened, designed luxuriously as an escape from the poverty in which people lived. By 1850, there were around 5000.
9. The Queen Mother used to enjoy a gin and Dubonnet before her lunch.
10. As much as gin is a beloved drink in Britain, the place with the highest per-capita consumption of gin in the world is the Republic of the Philippines.
