The Milk House, Pub and Restaurant in Sissinghurst, Kent is a beautiful 16th-century pub with chic en suite rooms, a lawn terrace and wood-fired pizza menus.
I stumbled across this gastropub, set in the heart of Kent, by pure chance a couple of years ago (before The Food And Drink was born).
After setting out to head towards Cranbrook, I took a detour and ended up at The Great House in Hawkhurst. After a quick pint at The Great House, I decided to venture back towards Cranbrook way. Having taken yet another detour en route, I ended up finding The Milk House in Sissinghurst, and i’m glad I did.
The Milk House is a gorgeous pub with a comprehensive selection of spirits, wines and real ales. In addition this this, the Milk House offer a range of craft beers and gastro menus, including barside pizzas or the restaurant area to the back of the pub to enjoy a quiet lunch or evening meal.
On my first visit to The Milk House, while perusing the draught ales on the pumps, I met a lovely chap at the bar who recommended a few ales. After chatting some more about food and drink (mainly drink) over the course of the evening, the gentleman introduced himself as Will Thompson, Frazier Thompson’s son and owner of the multi-award winning Chapel Down winery in Kent.
After working my way through a number of ales, we dropped Will back home and was delighted to have met a true gent who shared my passion for real ale. Will Thompson is Head beer taster for Fuggles in Royal Tunbridge Wells so had some fascinating insight and stories into what’s hot and what’s not in the beer world.
In addition to this, i also met British journalist, satirist, writer, broadcaster and editor of the magazine Private Eye, Ian Hislop (from BBC quiz show Have I Got News for You)… and BBC’s ‘Antiques Road Trip’ expert, Raj Bisram! Raj is one of the UK’s leading auctioneers and expert dealers on Sarah Beeny’s Four Rooms (Channel 4’s award winning show).
Not only was it a pleasure to have found such a fantastic pub, it was an absolute pleasure to have met them both through Will at the bar. With fantastic local produce, attentive, friendly staff and great company, this pub is up their with the best!
This 16th Century pub is steeped in tradition, but has a contemporary feel while retaining a number of original features throughout the building. With a grand frontage, the arched passage through the main entrance leads you through to a warm welcome from front of house staff, with the dining area to the left and the bar through to the right of pub.
The Milk House is a village pub situated in Sissinghurst, one of the most picturesque corners of Kent. A true village pub, oozing Kentish charm sat on The Street in the heart of the village and at the heart of the community.
This former 16th century hall house, with timber beams and a stunning Tudor fireplace, welcomes loyal locals, along with visitors from further afield, serving a selection of local beers, cask ales and great wines by the glass, including several from the area’s renowned vineyards and distilleries.
The bar has a Grazing Menu and on my most recent visit during the Winter, the fire was crackling! On my first visit here I enjoyed a warm Summer evening out on the sun-soaked terrace, so is a perfect stop-off all year round.
