Tipple Treat. Ghoulishly Gruesome Beers for Halloween
With Halloween creeping up on us, and frighteningly good beers cask-ing spells on the pumps, I thought i’d share some of the pints i’ve managed to get my claws on of late.
If you haven’t already done so (and are a bit of a dare devil), I’d recommend reading my ‘Tipple Treat. Frightening Good Beers for Halloween post. from last week. Not for the squeamish, but each one of the first five beers have devilishly good character… especially my personal favourite, The Bucket of Blood, by the guys over at the St Austell brewery in Cornwall.
In this post I shall be (as promised), reviewing five more squeamishly good beers that have jumped out at me of late.
6. Green Daemon, Hopdaemon Brewery, Sittingbourne, Kent, established in 2000
First up we have the Green Daemon from the Hopdaemon Brewery who are based in Sittingbourne, Kent. Green Daemon is a devilishly good Helles beer, with tropical fruit aroma and a crisp, clean finish. As a gold medal winner in 2007, 2010, 2011 SIBA Nationals and Silver in 2011, this beer has bite and weighs in at 5.0% ABV on draught. 🎃
7. Dr Morton’s Mandarin Claw of Death, Abbeydale Brewery, Sheffield, established in 1996
Dr Morton’s Mandarin Claw of Death is a delicious fruity pale beer. The tangerine notes are prominent which complement the Halloween season perfectly. With fruity, sweet flavours of the new German Mandarina Bavaria hops balanced nicely with the floral citrus Amarillo notes, this beer’s one to watch out for this autumn… or something a little different to spook your guests out this Halloween! 👻
8. Mostly Ghostly, York Brewery, Yorkshire, established in 1996
Mostly Ghostly puts fire in your belly! Made by The Chilli Jam Man and York Brewery. Deviously infusing the award-winning, dark ruby, Centurion’s Ghost Ale with the infamous and scary Ghost Pepper, Mostly Ghostly could give you a bit of a shock this Halloween!
Weighing in at 1.1 million Scoville heat units, and 5.4% ABV, the Ghost Pepper held the ‘World’s Hottest Chilli’ title for a number of years, can now be bought in a pint. Native to Assam and known locally as the ‘Bhut’ or ‘Naga’ it delivers a lovely delay to its heat, coupled with a long and powerful growing warmth which makes it the perfect chilli to enhance stronger flavours. Proceed with caution! 🌶🔥
9. Moorhouses White Witch, Burnley, Lancashire, established in 1865
Moorhouse White Witch is a light, refreshing and easy drinking blonde ale with a grapefruit aroma and fresh citrus finish. I’ve chosen this particular beer as an alternative to the darker ales following a great green hop season. It seems that Halloween brings a lot of porters and stouts, with the blondes being forgotten about, so the White Witch is definitely one to watch out for this Autumn!
10. Green Devil, Oakham Ales, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, established in 1995
Last, but certainly not least, we have the Green Devil IPA. A beautifully crafted beer that carries some weight. This modern IPA explodes with amazing hop harvest aromas, packs in big tropical and citrus hop flavours before a crisp, refreshing finish. Halloween isn’t Halloween without a bottle or two of this is the drinks cabinet!
