The Standard Inn, Jug and Bottle, Pub and Restaurant, Rye, East Sussex

The Standard Inn, Jug and Bottle, pub and restaurant, Rye, East Sussex is a quintessentially English pub set in the heart of Rye’s cobbled streets and crooked timber framed Tudor and Georgian houses. With an array of quirky independent traders selling antiques, art and vintage clothing, and a number of great pubs and restaurants, The Standard Inn was one that just had to make it on to The Food And Drink blog!

Popular with locals, The Standard Inn is a pub that is frequented by locals, regulars and tourists. After walking past and seeing that they had won Pub Of The Year 2017, just twelve months ago, I had to pop in to take a look for myself.

The Standard Inn offers food and drink in the downstairs Jug and Bottle bar and accommodation upstairs. With a charming facade, the interior was welcoming and had an immediate buzz regarding the crowd and decor. The Jug and Bottle bar oozed charm and was divided into two parts, the bar to the right and a dining area to the left. The Standard Inn also has a small garden to the back which was sun-kissed with a beautiful sunset when I visited.

Although I had stumbled across this pub by coincidence, it wasn’t long before I had bumped into my uncle at the bar! Upon recommendation, I proceeded to order a pint of Farmers Ale which brewed specifically for The Standard Inn’s Jug and Bottle by the local Kentish brewery, Old Dairy in Tenterten. A beautiful drop! Although i’m familiar with (and a fan of) the Old Diary brewery, I had not come across this drop before. An absolute pleasure and a must try if you see it on the taps.

I also ordered a bottle of Orchard Pig, Totally Minted (bottled just down the road in Romney) during my visit and went to sit with my aunty and uncle who had ordered a baked camembert which looked great! They also said their starters and mains were equally great. With all this talk if food and drink, I decided to check out one of Rye’s great eateries, and fairly new addition to Rye, namely a burger restaurant called Hoof.

The Standard Inn in Rye has a cracking menu too, offering reasonable priced locally sourced food, just how I like it! With a comprehensive wine list and spirits menu, craft beers and ales including its very own Standard Inn Farmer Ale (brewed for the pub by the old Diary brewery), it wasn’t long before I felt at home!

Vegetarian and gluten free options are also available too, just ask behind the bar for details. The pub also serves local craft beers and ales too. Vegetarian and gluten free meals are available on request, although you may want to check out The Fig at the other end of the high street if you’d prefer something without meat.

With a relaxed feel to the pub and friendly, knowledgeable staff and great service, this is definitely a place to let your hair down and enjoy some good pub grub in charming surroundings with a good crowd.

The Standard Inn, Jug and Bottle Bar in Rye has a great ambience and welcoming staff. They do get rather busy from early evening and cannot reserve tables for diners by pre-booking, so would recommend getting their early should you wish to eat at The Standard Inn’s Jug and Bottle in the evening.
